(Schedule Updated 9/16/2011)
Allegro conducts FREE weekly movement education classes at local preschools, empowering children at risk with unidentified disabilities to learn pre-literacy skills in preparation for Kindergarten readiness.
Allegro’s preschool students are often from very poor families where participation in organized activities cannot be afforded, and most live in neighborhoods where it is unsafe to play outdoors. Many have even become homeless and lost their healthcare benefits due to the current state of our economy!
Collaborating with teachers and literacy facilitators, Allegro Foundation develops a curriculum based on the NC Mandated Course of Study. Lessons to reinforce classroom learning are incorporated into each class, providing all students a more complete understanding of academic concepts. For children with learning disabilities and those at risk, movement creates a physical and cognitive connection between important concepts such as counting and maintaining a specified order, vital for learning to read.
